Carolus Vitalis was elected an editor of the Synthetic Biology Open Language (SBOL) in 2023, one of five editors who maintain the field’s open standard for describing biological designs.

SBOL gives synthetic biologists a shared, machine-readable language for representing and exchanging genetic parts, devices, and systems. Its editors, chosen by a community vote and serving two-year terms, maintain the specification, weigh proposed changes, and steward interoperability across the tools that use it. Vitalis had been a member of the SBOL community since 2021.
